It is a tradition. Open the door with the number 1 on it. Discover what is inside. It could be a picture, it might be a treat. It could feasibly be anything. Advent calendars have come a long way in recent years.
The Advent Calendar counts the days off till Christmas. In the Church, Advent is a time of preparation or should be. A time to prepare for the coming Son of God. Other traditions and beliefs have similar themes at this time of year, such as Winter Solstice. We’ll get to those in due course.
I’m using this time of Advent, along with a whole number of other astrological events and dates that are taking place this December, to review my year, take stock and step forward.
By the end of this time, I’ll have my focus word for 2018. I want my goals set for the year ahead and a plan to achieve them. And I’m going to share the process here.
And the image above? It’s the view from a train journey I took yesterday. It was a lovely day out. A meet up with a good friend. A lot of personal reminiscing and thinking about what was, what is and what might have been (I have a song with those words). Don’t worry, I’m not going all nostalgic.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
But there’s a moment before my journey. That moment is understanding where I am. If I don’t know where I am, how will I know if I want or need to take a journey? That is my day one Advent window. A window that opens and allows me to see where I am.
What do you see beyond your window?
