It’s time for Throwback Thursday. It’s snowing outside and cold, so I’m staying in. Sitting here, in the cold, is an ideal time to think about the past. I visited Germany several times when I was at school. It was the obligatory school exchange. I’m sure I spent several Thursdays there.
Some things were the same back then. I fell in love, well that’s compulsory
Some things were different. Germany was a divided country, it had a West and an East half
But music was music. Most of my nostalgic moments are coloured by the music of the time. There were several songs on various trips that bring back memories. There was the obvious, like Kraftwerk. But there were also the songs that were heard over and over, the soundtrack to the visits.
Peter Schilling’s Major Tom Völlig Losgelöst was being played all the time on one visit. It eventually became a minor worldwide hit and I still give it a spin every so often myself.
Before Rock me Amadeus, Falco released Der Kommissar. It was later covered by ATF but, for me, it was Falco’s version that is the earworm.
My first electronic keyboard was a Casio VL Tone 1. It was used by the Human League on their Dare album, but also by Trio on their song Da Da Da. And I was in Germany on the exchange when they did.
Three letter acronyms are part of my life. As well as ATF there was DAF. Until I went to Germany they were a Dutch truck manufacturer. When I returned they were an interesting musical diversion. I would offer a link to YouTube but the songs there are far from official. And doing a Google search for Sex Unter Wasser – yes, it means exactly what it sounds like – might skew my Internet ads in a direction I don’t really want to go.
I still have a love for German music. Kraftwerk are still, and always will be, on my playlist. Rammstein and Blutengel are more recent additions. They make fine additions to my throwback Thursday memories, this cold and snowy day.
