In this week’s creative field notes, I am getting things done, despite the blips that all creatives have.
A short exploration of Easter Saturday, weaving a narrative and basking in the ifs of who and what takes place between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
The site needs a bit of a refresh, so as they used to say it is under construction. As such things might not look right, work right, or even feel right. But only until everything is new and shiny. After that… who knows.
This month has been productive despite global chaos, and I have noticed the importance of maintaining a positive and intentional creative practice.
This week’s creative field notes include how I am keeping up with February Album Writing Month and coming up with a few other creative ideas.
January has been a difficult month for this creative minimalist. However, the festival of Imbolc is as good a time as any to make a creative new start. This week’s vlog explores recent creative highs and lows.

My latest journal and planner set-up. Finally, a new video to explain what is going on.

A Fiction Writing Prompt to stretch the literary muscles. No rules. No word counts. Simply write and explore.
The sky filled with clouds, thick dark rain clouds. Then it began, at last, the rain began to fall. It was…
I love it when it rains. I find my senses turn to overdrive. Being able to stand outside as the rain falls is one of life’s pleasures. If I stand outside barefoot and let my feet and toes feel the wet ground it is even better. And a little rain brings all the smells to life, no longer dead and dry, now alive and rejuvenated.
Use this prompt to describe how the rain brings everything back to life. Be as descriptive as possible. And try to use similes and metaphors to give your writing new life.
You can write in the first or third person. Use your character, or characters, to describe the scene. You could explore why the rain is welcome, a little back story is always helpful.
This writing prompt is a companion, and opposite to the prompt It had stopped.
As always these writing prompts are optional and entirely open to your own interpretation. Use them as a starting point for a short story or something a little more grandiose. If you do write something, please share it or a link, in the comments or tag me. I’d love to read what you create,

Impact… beat… nothing … beat… and then the pain shot through me a pain like nothing before.
Have you ever stubbed your toe, your little toe? Or stepped on a sharp object whilst barefoot? I find it almost impossible to walk across a stony beach without wearing a shoe or sandal. Our feet are sensitive and they let us know when they are uncomfortable, or in shock.
This prompt is all about pain, immediate pain. It is about describing the intensity and the suddenness.
It is always possible that your reaction to the initial pain leads to a near farcical chain of events. And the good thing about it all is that this is fiction and you haven’t really hurt your foot… but keep an eye out for things laying around on the floor.

Some things come in vintage-style boxes, other things have been in cupboards so long that they become vintage. We found some old candles.

There is no one. Shops are closed with windows boarded up or just abandoned. It looks like a ghost town. What has happened…
How about a little apocalypse? Of course, it doesn’t have to be. That’s the freedom you have in these prompts. I thought it would be good to describe the emptiness of where your protagonist is. To explore and develop your descriptive toolbox.
One way to do this is to contrast the still and silent with the normal busyness and noise. Make comparisons as you describe the location.
And of course, there is how this all makes the protagonist feel.
