At last the rain – Friday Fiction Writing Prompt

Writing Prompt Expanded

I love it when it rains. I find my senses turn to overdrive. Being able to stand outside as the rain falls is one of life’s pleasures. If I stand outside barefoot and let my feet and toes feel the wet ground it is even better. And a little rain brings all the smells to life, no longer dead and dry, now alive and rejuvenated.

Use this prompt to describe how the rain brings everything back to life. Be as descriptive as possible. And try to use similes and metaphors to give your writing new life.

  • How does the rain affect your senses?
  • What sound does it make?
  • What can you smell?
  • Are you standing outside as the rain falls?

You can write in the first or third person. Use your character, or characters, to describe the scene. You could explore why the rain is welcome, a little back story is always helpful.

This writing prompt is a companion, and opposite to the prompt It had stopped.

As always these writing prompts are optional and entirely open to your own interpretation. Use them as a starting point for a short story or something a little more grandiose. If you do write something, please share it or a link, in the comments or tag me. I’d love to read what you create,

Pain – Friday Fiction Writing Prompt

August 7, 2020 by Darren Leave a Comment

Impact… beat… nothing … beat… and then the pain shot through me, a pain like nothing before. - Friday Fiction Writing Prompt

Impact… beat… nothing … beat… and then the pain shot through me a pain like nothing before.

Writing Prompt Expanded

Have you ever stubbed your toe, your little toe? Or stepped on a sharp object whilst barefoot? I find it almost impossible to walk across a stony beach without wearing a shoe or sandal. Our feet are sensitive and they let us know when they are uncomfortable, or in shock.

This prompt is all about pain, immediate pain. It is about describing the intensity and the suddenness.

  • What does the pain remind you of?
  • How does the pain in your foot affect the rest of your body?
  • What senses can you use to describe the pain?

It is always possible that your reaction to the initial pain leads to a near farcical chain of events. And the good thing about it all is that this is fiction and you haven’t really hurt your foot… but keep an eye out for things laying around on the floor.

As always these writing prompts are optional and entirely open to your own interpretation. Use them as a starting point for a short story or something a little more grandiose. If you do write something, please share it or a link, in the comments or tag me. I’d love to read what you create

Almost vintage? Wordless Wednesday

Price's white candles - old box

Some things come in vintage-style boxes, other things have been in cupboards so long that they become vintage. We found some old candles.

There is no one – Friday Fiction Writing Prompt

Writing Prompt Expanded

How about a little apocalypse? Of course, it doesn’t have to be. That’s the freedom you have in these prompts. I thought it would be good to describe the emptiness of where your protagonist is. To explore and develop your descriptive toolbox.

One way to do this is to contrast the still and silent with the normal busyness and noise. Make comparisons as you describe the location.

  • What would normally be taking place?
  • Who would regularly be seen here?
  • What sounds are now long gone?
  • Without people do the buildings take on personalities or human traits?

And of course, there is how this all makes the protagonist feel.

The white fluffy clouds – Friday Fiction Writing Prompt

July 24, 2020 by Darren Leave a Comment

White fluffy clouds drift gently across the azure sky. The sight transports me back at once. The memory, as vivid as the heavens.

Writing Prompt Expanded

Sights and sounds, tastes and smells, and touch sensations are powerful. They can bring back memories long-forgotten, both good and bad.

This prompt allows you to explore how seeing the clouds in the sky brings back a memory. As the memory is vivid allow yourself to explore the other senses.

  • What can you hear?
  • What can you smell?
  • Is there an associated taste?
  • What do you feel, underfoot, fingertips or somewhere else?

Although you can draw on your own memories I would advise not using this prompt to remember your own past. That could bring up painful and other negative thoughts. So please be careful. These prompts are for you to enjoy and develop your writing ability, not work through serious trauma. Please find someone who can help you if you need it.

As always these writing prompts are optional and entirely open to your own interpretation. Use them as a starting point for a short story or something a little more grandiose. If you do write something, please share it or a link, in the comments or tag me. I’d love to read what you create

All the colours in the sea

July 22, 2020 by Darren 2 Comments

Wordless Wednesday

Stone steps in the sea
Stone steps in the sea
Stone steps in the sea

I went to the local fishing town yesterday. The weather was beautiful and the sun was shining. When I looked down I thought the colours were lovely. So I took a couple of pictures. The pictures don’t really do justice to the beautiful colours, but I hope you can get a feeling of them.
